Renee Hobbs: «Whether propaganda is beneficial or harmful is in the eye of the beholder»

In times where the whole world is witnessing unprecedented changes in the different aspects of daily life, it is important to have the knowledge and skills to cope positively. In that sense, media literacy can be a mindset and a lifestyle rather than a curriculum.

Renee Hobbs is an internationally-recognized authority on digital and media literacy education. Through community and global service and as a researcher, teacher, advocate and media professional, Hobbs has worked to advance the quality of digital and media literacy education in the United States and around the world. She is Founder and Director of the Media Education Lab, whose mission is to improve the quality of media literacy education through research and community service[i].

In this fruitful discussion with AIKA, Renee Hobbs explains to us how media literacy can be understood and applied in today’s context covering various dimensions.  Hobbs also talks to us about her recently published book ‘Mind over Media: Propaganda Education for a Digital Age‘ where she breaks down the true meaning of propaganda from a modern perspective and the role of media literacy. We also talk to Hobbs about her upcoming book ‘Media Literacy in Action‘ which is designed to help youth to have an in-depth understanding of the concepts of media literacy, empowering them through knowledge and critical skills.
